Taking care of Faux Leather.

If you are a leather enthusiast like me, you probably own lots of faux leather clothing items. Leather leggings, Jackets, catsuits and so many more.

Doesn't matter if you own faux leather because of being environmentally conscious or because of its price - it's way cheaper than real leather, and the faux leather material does provide a good experience.

Faux Leather is cheaper but less Durable.

Don't get me wrong, certain faux leather materials can be durable if taken care of well but it is safer to say that real leather is much more durable and will require much more care.

I love faux leather because it's quite fashionable, gives a clean finishing, rarely gets stained, and is readily available and cheap. I've had to learn the hard way how to store and clean my faux leather clothing.

Faux Leather Cracking

Why does faux leather crack?

Well, there are many reasons and I've been a victim of this so many times and I didn't know what to do about it.

Three reasons why faux leather cracks;

  • The material is not of good quality.

  • Heat

  • Drying out of the material.

Heat

I live in the tropics, you can imagine how hot it is. It's hot all year round with periods of high and low humidity.

I remember when I first bought a decent pair of leather leggings, they only lasted like a month before I realized they were literally disintegrating.

The material was coming off in tiny black bits, I was so disappointed. They had cracked.

Now I know better, they couldn't handle the heat.

The heat was too much for that kind of material, sometimes almost melting the legging lol.

I had to be conscious of when I was to wear them, mostly during the rainy cool days.

Avoid being in the sun for long periods to avoid degrading your faux leather.

Quality of the Material

I already mentioned faux leather comes in so many forms. Apart from just making clothing, faux leather is also used to make chairs, couches, etc.

Of course, the material used to make couches is not the same as the one used to make clothing, it is stronger and more rigid and most of the time will last longer compared to the other forms.

The material that I love the most for my leggings is polyester or the plasticky material that stretches nicely to accommodate my body shape. This is the material that is used on the majority of false leather leggings.

The material is so thin that it easily gets damaged, so you have to be very careful with your clothing and how you decide to wear them.

Drying up of the Faux Leather Material

If you are a beginner at wearing faux leather you probably will notice that your piece of clothing will start becoming flaky after wearing it for some time. Well, this means that the material is drying up.

The often the material is polished, the longer it lasts. The material can be prevented from cracking by applying some baby oil and gently massaging it into the material.

Careful with the type of faux leather you use baby oil on because the baby oil can strip off color from some faux leather material. Very important to read the labels that come with your piece of clothing.

Use the above tips to make your faux leather last even longer.

Otherwise, you will be in the shops a lot.
